Can dirty filters harm my heat pump or air conditioning unit?

January 20, 2012 By tempcontrolllc

Yes! A dirty Nashville filter will slow down the airflow making the system work harder to keep you warm or cool. The reduced airflow across the evaporator or indoor coil interferes with the refrigeration cycle causing ice to form on the coil. Since your air conditioning system or heat pump can’t adequately heat or cool the air, the system keeps working, maybe for several hours before you notice a problem. This wastes a lot of energy! If this happens to you, turn your system off, and let it thaw for a few hours. If you have an indoor furnace or air handler, keep an eye on the condensation pan as the ice melts. A plugged condensation line could cause the water to overflow which might damage your ceiling or drywall. If draining is a problem, you may need to vacuum the drain pan to save your drywall. After the melting has stopped, you should probably get service to clean your drain line.

You can prevent this with routine Nashville filter changes. You should check your filters at least once a month (more often if you have indoor pets) for optimal performance of your HVAC system. Change your filter if you cannot see through it. An easy way to remember is to check it every time you receive your electric bill. Another way is to follow Temp Control LLC on Facebook, Twitter, and Google+ as we post monthly filter check reminders.

You won’t have a problem changing your Nashville filters if you have several on hand. Stock up on filters the next time you go shopping. The big box stores usually have the common sizes. Your HVAC contractor can help you find odd sizes.

Believe it or not, thicker Nashville filters are not necessarily better. Thicker, pleated filters restrict airflow making your unit work harder. Your unit will operate ideally with 30-day mesh filters. Mesh filters are actually less expensive than pleated filters! It never hurts to save money!
